Unity

Connect the microphone to the computer. (If you don't have a microphone a set of headphones will work.)
Right click on the '''Volume Control''' icon on the right side of the top panel
Open ''Sound Preferences'' or ''Sound Setting''.
Go to the ''Input'' tab and ensure that the ''Input'' volume of the microphone is set to an appropriate level and is not muted.
Press the ''Super Windows key'', or click the Ubuntu logo in the upper left hand unity panel and search '''Sound Recorder'''.
Click the ''Record'' button (the red circle).
Talk briefly into the microphone.
Click the ''Stop'' button (the gray square).
Click the ''Play'' button (the right-facing triangle). Verify that your voice is played back and that no words have been dropped. (Remember to reset your microphone volume to prevent feedback on the internal microphone.)

GNOME Classic

Connect the microphone to the computer. (If you don't have a microphone a set of headphones will work.)
Open Sound Preferences '''(System -> Preferences -> Sound Preferences)'''.
Go to the Input tab and ensure that the Input volume of the microphone is set to an appropriate level and is not muted.
Now open Sound Recorder '''(Applications -> Sound & Video -> Sound Recorder)'''.
Click the Record button (the red circle).
Talk briefly into the microphone.
Click the Stop button (the gray square).
Click the Play button (the right-facing triangle). Verify that your voice is played back and that no words have been dropped. (Remember to reset your microphone volume to prevent feedback on the internal microphone.)

Verification

Verify that sound is recorded through the microphone.
