- Connect the microphone to the computer. (If you don't have a microphone a set of headphones will work.)
- Right click on the '''Volume Control''' icon on the right side of the top panel
- Open ''Sound Preferences'' or ''Sound Setting''.
- Go to the ''Input'' tab and ensure that the ''Input'' volume of the microphone is set to an appropriate level and is not muted.
- Press the ''Super Windows key'', or click the Ubuntu logo in the upper left hand unity panel and search '''Sound Recorder'''.
- Click the ''Record'' button (the red circle).
- Talk briefly into the microphone.
- Click the ''Stop'' button (the gray square).
- Click the ''Play'' button (the right-facing triangle). Verify that your voice is played back and that no words have been dropped. (Remember to reset your microphone volume to prevent feedback on the internal microphone.)
- Verify that sound is recorded through the microphone.
GNOME Classic

- Open Sound Preferences '''(System -> Preferences -> Sound Preferences)'''.
- Go to the Input tab and ensure that the Input volume of the microphone is set to an appropriate level and is not muted.
- Now open Sound Recorder '''(Applications -> Sound & Video -> Sound Recorder)'''.
- Click the Record button (the red circle).
- Talk briefly into the microphone.
- Click the Stop button (the gray square).
- Click the Play button (the right-facing triangle). Verify that your voice is played back and that no words have been dropped. (Remember to reset your microphone volume to prevent feedback on the internal microphone.)
- Verify that sound is recorded through the microphone.
